PHOTOGRAPHER INSPIRATION - MADS PERCH

Mads Perch 

Mads Perch is Danish-born London based photographer. Perch began his photography career shooting portraits for fashion magazine i-D and now works with a wide range of music, fashion, style and commercial clients. Perch has previously worked with various bands producing images and recorded sleeves including Klaxons 'Surfing the Void'.

I will be inspired by his collection of photograph's called 'Digital Romantics' which consists of beautiful portraits layered with vibrant imagery. The manipulated projections have produced an outstanding amount of colour using abstract and dynamic patterns over model's faces. I aim to produce a similar outcome, using a projector to physically layering moving images/videos over my actress. I will also conduct a photo shoot for my ancillary task by composing similar photographs as Perch. I like the dramatic contrast in light between the vibrant patterns/shapes and the dark background which I aim to replicate in my own work.

     

PROJECTION MOODBOARD

I have created a moodboard of images in order to inspire me when I come to film the new projection segment of my music video. The images taken from the internet help me to visualize the different images I will project onto my actress by seeing which is the most effective and what I would want to recreate. I also found interesting the different compositions others had used in their work, which mostly included close-ups and mid shots as the face is common subject to focus on. During filming I want to project the hallucination videos onto my model's skin, particularly her face where her expressions and thus feelings can be depicted.

DIGIPAK ANCILLARY PHOTOGRAPHS

I have created a slideshow (inserted below) of every single photograph I captured during the photo shoot of my actress Millie for my Digipak. During the shoot I firstly experimented with lighting using the torch on an iPhone as a source of light which was positioned directly underneath Millie's face. I wanted to create dark shadows across her face, particularly around her eyes which failed to look effective on camera compared to real life. Instead I used the flash on my camera which brought an intense amount of light onto her face whilst leaving the background completely black, which I still think looks scary and horrified.

NEW IDEA//PROJECTION

SEGMENT C - PROJECTION

My new idea involves using a digital overhead projector connected to a computer in order to project hallucinating/confusing/abstract/distorted videos taken from YouTube onto my actress' skin. This will give her skin a new texture involving colourful shapes and patterns that will also be projected onto the white background, creating an almost camouflage effect. I have chosen to project in particular hallucination videos which will reflect how the character is feeling inside but on the outside to make it obvious to the viewer. These emotions include confusion, doubt, anger, anxiety which are all evoked when overthinking your regret.  Hallucination videos include looking at stationary objects which appear to be move, spirals, abstract shapes and optical illusions which cause natural hallucinations. The after-effects include seeing the pattern repeating in front of the eyes temporarily, transforming the surrounding environment and making objects appear everywhere. The hallucination effect will give the audience a similar feeling to what my actress is internally feeling shown through her dramatic body language. During this filming session I also aim to take photographs for my poster which include a portrait photograph of Millie posing seriously with a spiraling image over her skin.
